On March 12, 2026, Kharkiv National ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ of Radio Electronics hosted an offline training workshop for staff from university libraries across Kharkiv.
The workshop, titled “How to Speak Respectfully About Disability: The Role of a Librarian in Creating a Barrier-Free Space,” brought together librarians to focus on inclusive and accessible communication.
The event was organized by the ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Scientific Library in collaboration with the “ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Without Limits” Accessibility Service.
During the session, participants discussed the importance of appropriate terminology when referring to persons with disabilities, the “People-First Language” principle, ethical interactions with library visitors, and the essential role librarians play in fostering an accessible, barrier-free environment.
Such initiatives contribute to building a more open, empathetic, and inclusive library environment for all. After all, a barrier-free space begins not only with ramps, but with respect, knowledge, and the right words.
